Execution Process
The coastal sand and rope hurricane lantern brings casual organic texture and breezy maritime aesthetics to indoor and outdoor dining spaces. Large clear glass hurricane vases serve as the structural framework for this design, offering high clarity that displays layered interior elements cleanly. Encircling the upper rim and lower base of the glass cylinder with thick natural manila or cotton rope introduces nautical character while framing the transparent glass display. Inside the vessel, clean white decorative sand provides a neutral, tactile bed that securely holds pillar candles while catching dripping wax safely. Combining rough rope fibers, fine mineral sand, and smooth glass creates dynamic textural contrast that fits coastal, modern farmhouse, and summer patio layouts. This project is wind-resistant and durable, making it an exceptional option for outdoor dining where lighter arrangements might be blown over by evening breezes.
To prepare the hurricane lantern, thoroughly clean a large nine-inch glass cylinder vase to remove all surface dust. Take a coil of half-inch thick nautical cotton or manila rope and use hot glue to anchor the starting end at the bottom outer edge of the cylinder. Wrap the rope firmly around the base for three consecutive revolutions, applying lines of adhesive along the glass to secure each coil tightly against the previous row; trim the end neatly at a diagonal angle. Repeat this wrapping process along the top rim of the vase, creating two neat coils of rope to balance the composition. Once the glue has set, pour approximately two inches of clean white decorative sand into the interior bottom of the hurricane. Press a three-inch-wide pillar candle firmly into the center of the sand layer until it stands straight. Complete the presentation by scattering small, natural bleached seashells over the sand surrounding the candle base.
