Idea 2: Industrial Workshop Hardware Sorting Grid
How to Make
An industrial workshop hardware sorting grid utilizes a series of clear or lightly tinted plastic canisters mounted horizontally along a wooden rail to establish an incredibly efficient, low-cost organization matrix for tiny metallic fasteners. This design concept relies on screwing the plastic bottle caps permanently into the underside of a wooden shelf or a dedicated wall-mounted pine board, allowing the bottles to screw or snap into place underneath. The visual presentation is highly structured, industrial, and clean, keeping loose items like nails, screws, washers, and cotter pins completely off your workbench surface while keeping them visible for quick access. This structural approach is exceptionally practical for active garages, home basements, and maker spaces because it keeps tiny components organized and protected from sawdust, grease, and accidental spills.

The fabrication process begins by selecting a clean piece of one-by-three-inch pine wood board cut to match the width of your workbench, sanding the wood smooth to eliminate splinters. Arrange eight matching plastic medicine bottle caps along the wide flat face of the wood board, spacing them evenly at two-inch intervals to ensure ample finger clearance when twisting the bottles. Drill a pilot hole directly through the center of each plastic cap and into the underlying wood board using a portable cordless drill equipped with a thin drill bit. Secure the caps permanently to the wood rail by driving flat-head wood screws through the drilled holes, ensuring the screw heads sit completely flush against the inside of the cap to prevent interference with the bottle threads. Mount the wooden rail securely to your workshop wall studs using a spirit level, then fill the plastic bottles with your loose hardware components and screw them upward into their designated mounted caps.
